As a Cambridge College graduate student, SuzannePorter, Social Worker would often turn to playing the piano, both as a source of fun and as a
way to help support herself. Porter continues to enjoy the piano, and is noted
for ability to play songs by ear.
Though a somewhat complex instrument, as SuzannePorter knows, it is
possible to teach yourself the piano without the need for years upon years of
lessons. Self-instruction comes in the form of three basic methods, including:
Learning by Ear
Replicating songs you’ve heard on the piano may not be for
everyone, but for those with a good ear, this may be the easiest way to
circumvent the standard piano lessons process.
Key Familiarization
Another way to self-teach the piano is by taking the time to
familiarize yourself with the varying keys and tones across the 88-key
platform. This method may require a bit of practice, though the act of
engraining notes and their positions into your head can lead to easy navigation
and smoother playing later on.
